From Antilia to Sri Lanka- Mapping the stars of Shaadi Season

Like the scarlet and gold poinsettia every winter, shaadi season also brings up some well beloved familiar people and places every year. Wedding ensembles by Manish Malhotra, appearances by Shahrukh Khan, the gorgeous Turf Club, the magnificent designs at the largest farmhouses in Delhi, regal celebrations at Jagmandir or Umaid Bhavan Palace and the most stylish post-wedding parties at destination wedding hot-spots.

The last two shaadi seasons though, have brought whispers of a new, fantastic venue that features on every wish-list– the Ambani residence, Antilia which has played host to some of the grandest pre-wedding and post-wedding soirées.

Friends of and those privileged to receive invitations from the country’s wealthiest family are still breathless from the extravagant fashion show conceptualized by Manish Malhotra for the pre-wedding celebration of an Ambani clan member. Yes, you heard it right. Manish Malhotra was roped in to design a collection dedicated only to the very exclusive fashion show that set the mood for three days of a lavish wedding.

The theme was OTT. The models wore ornate bridal creations. The living room and prayer areas of Antilia were decorated in an opulent floral theme by wedding-designer extraordinaire, Gurleen Raheja. All the ingredients to make it one of the grandest indoor celebrations witnessed.

Tonight, Antilia plays host to a post-wedding party for none other that Harbhajan Singh and his new bride, Geeta Basra. Manish Malhotra and Gurleen Raheja have been asked to play an encore and design thematic décor. It will be a wonderland!

While they may not all have their celebrations at Antilia, other big fat Indian weddings are no less incredible. When businessman Atulya Mafatlal walked down the aisle the second time with society diva Sheetal Mafatlal in 2000, their wedding was the talk of the town. 16 years later, Atulya’s daughter Marushka wed Pune businessman Rohan Seolekar and the series of events took place across the Turf Club and a large golf course outside Pune.

And there are the exotic destination weddings too. This year’s palette of incredible skies, beaches, starry nights and crazy dancing include venues like the luxurious Shangri-La, Muscat, Jetwing Blue Negombo in Sri Lanka and Udai Vilas, Udaipur. Ace designer Kunal Rawal’s sister Sasha Rawal tied the knot at the Shangri- La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa in Oman. The wedding was attended by Sonam and Rhea Kapoor, amongst other Bollywood celebrities. This week fashionista Aparna Badlani of eclectic multi-designer Atosa said her ‘I Do’s’ in Serendib, at the Jetwing Blue Negombo in Sri Lanka.

While Thailand, Sri Lanka and Oman are deservedly popular international destinations, a post on high profile Indian weddings will never be complete without mentioning Udaipur, Jodhpur or Jaipur. Builder and billiards champion Rishabh Thakkar wed writer and actress Sukhmani Sadana at the Samode Palace, Jaipur this week. While Udai Vilas, one of the finest hotels in the world played host to another high profile (and very private) wedding.
