Shyamal and Bhumika present a luxurious, traditional collection@ Lakme Fashion Week
Aug 20, 2011 Fashion & Bridal Wear
The very glittering show opened with Bollywood’s Eesha Deol looking absolutely stunning in a red velvet lehenga and choli with a gorgeous net dupatta. The creations that glided down the catwalk were visions of utter beauty and style. Men’s jackets, sherwanis jodhpurs with assorted glittering embellishments were teamed with skin tight pants or lamé dhotis. Women’s wear was a profusion of the most exquisite net lehengas with gold lamé petticoats, long line tulle kurta with ornate yoke, saris with glittering broad borders and long shirt teamed with gold bikini style tops under floor length net covers. The fabric story was rich and opulent, detailing was the highlight of the creations.
To match the grandeur of the show Shyamal and Bhumika’s selected their show stopper with great care. It was the Dream Girl of many Indians, the stately beautiful Hema Malini who elegantly walked down the ramp wearing a two-tone sari in brocade and red velvet with the most breathtaking embroidery.

Sabyasachi’s colour fantasy@ Lakme Fashion Week
Aug 20, 2011 Fashion & Bridal Wear
Sabyasachi’s collection would bring much happiness to the Punjabi girl thanks to his nostalgic collection taking inspiration from what girls of North-West Frontier Province wear. We can imagine the teary-eyed mothers of brides-to-be wanting a piece of history in their daughter’s trousseau. Using khadi, organza, net, silk and velvet and the beautiful thread work from Kashmir with Zardozi in shimmering silver with floral designs but restrained bling the maestro of style and design gave us an utterly satisfying experience of ethnic fashion. The famed Kashmir embroidery appeared on boleros, waistcoats and edges of swirling kurtas, bundis, tunics, cholis, cropped tops, sherwanis and dupattas. The wide Patiala salwars, the elephant pants, the flowing palazzos and the cowled pants matched perfectly with the smocks, tunics, kurtas, and jackets. The saris with ornate borders at times split into velvet and net with shimmering edges were teamed with long sleeved embroidered cholis. The gleaming velvet smocks with embellished bodices and Patiala salwars, the cute scaled down versions of the same for the young boys and girls, ensured that the collection will be sold out in no time.
How delish are those embroided head bands. The full sleeved cholis in black- to die for. But the best and most heartening moment of the show was when we saw those little boys on the ramp– in those cutest turbans and caps.

Payal Kapoor presents festive ‘Rang Birangi’ collection
Aug 19, 2011 Fashion & Bridal Wear
Payal Kapoor’s unveiled her collection called ‘Rang Birangi’ at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011. Staying on the ethnic path, Payal Kapoor’s gave her saris, blouses, salwar/kameezes and tunics all the touches that will appeal to brides and the festive dressers. Fluid silhouettes in net and silk swayed down the catwalk in shades of rust, dull green and nude. Lavishly using ombre for the garments, Payal gave the sari blouses a generous splash of sequins in multi colours. Combining the traditional with the more elegant touch and adding ethnic motifs, Payal used gota and aari embroidery lavishly. Displaying a collection of lean tunics or Kalidar kurtas with a wide assortment of gota and Dabka work on the borders and the main garment, Payal showed a line of ethereal net saris in dual shades of beige/turquoise or red/ivory which were teamed with shimmering gold churidars or slim petticoats. Net played a major role for the majority of the collection and even appeared for the wide salwars.
Payal ended the show with a solo entry by super model Sheetal Malhar in a flame red net lehenga/choli combo encrusted with unbelievable embellishments and draped in an orange net dupatta.

Payal Singhal’s ‘Bridal Fantasy’ collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011 was a sensuous offering to brides. Sensational, fluid and seductively flowing sheer anarkalis and diaphanous lehengas glided down the ramp evoking visions of Umrao Jaan and Lady Gaga – two complete contrasting fashion icons. Shimmering New Age metallic fabrics were teamed with soft pretty pastels and embellished with the richness of mukaish, filigree, resham and zardozi work. Shades of cream, ivory, nude, blush melon, apricot, champagne, ash green, sea blue, sage green, were selected for lush fabrics like tulle, brocades, and silks. Kalidar kurtas, ornate blouses, glittering lehengas, kurtas with shimmering churidars- the look was pure opulence. The embroidery was used cleverly as crystals and polkis shimmered on yokes, as necklaces, were draped over shoulders, and gleamed in zardozi splendor on the lehengas, blouses and dupattas.

Shyamal & Bhumika’s ‘Bejewelled’ spells Opulence
Sep 21, 2010 Bridal Shows & Wedding Exhibitions, Fashion & Bridal Wear
Shyamal & Bhumika’s collection titled “Bejewelled” was inspired by Maharajas and their grandeur. On display were heaviest of velvets, lots of silk nets, gold lame and brocades– in jewel tones like bright red, sangria, plum, wine, emerald green, gold ochre and champagne beige.
Our top picks from the show- the heavily embroidered maroon lehenga with dep red dupatta and beige choli; and the splendid red and green sari that Sunidhi Chauhan walked the ramp in.
The highpoint of the show was the ramp walk by dapper music directors, Salim and Sulaiman– the former in a red dhoti salwar and cream bundgala and the latter in a blue heavily embroidered sherwani.

Designer Puneet Nanda of label ‘Satya Paul’ drew inspiration from famed tarot symbols like Empress, Lovers, Wands and Chariots for his bridal collection for Lakme Fashion Week Festive/Winter 2010. For us it was a mixed big with some gorgeous sarees especially the blue toned silk sari with dazzling border and long sleeved black net choli that Shruti Haasan walked the ramp in. And then there were some that brought back happy memories of Madhuri Dixit dancing to “Didi Tera Dewar…”!!
