Bhairavi Jaikishan to present ‘The Enchanted Garden’ at India Bridal Week
Sep 23, 2011 Fashion & Bridal Wear
As a little girl Bhairavi Jaikishan would spend a lot of time at her mother’s fashion studio, and fashion designing was the most natural career choice for the daughter of celebrated designer Pallavi Jaikishan. So after completing her textile designing at Sophia College, Bhairavi went on to study fashion designing in the United States and then returned to Mumbai where she set up her label ‘Bhairavi Jaishan’ in 1987.
Bhairavi is participating at a Fashion Week for the first time– she showcases her collection ‘The Enchanted Garden’ at India Bridal Week on 24th September. Bhairavi retails bridal and occasion wear at her store in Juhu and she is showing her creations on the ramp, after almost a decade. Says Bhairavi: “Family commitments have kept me very busy, now my sons are 9 and 5 years old, so I can now devote a little more time to work”. Unlike most designers, Bhairavi is rarely seen at glamorous dos and she and her businessman husband prefer to spend their free time with family and close-friends only. “I’m a very private person”, states Bhairavi “I don’t even have a Facebook account, even though all my friends are cajoling me to get on to FB.”
Bhairavi says her clothes are inspired by life in general, and her collections are a lot about feelings. She says: “It’s all about feeling beautiful and confident, and not just about looking beautiful.” At India Bridal Week, Bhairavi will showcase sarees, lehengas, ornate kurtas. “The classic, traditional creations have been given an avante garde modern touch while retaining the richness of embroidery, detailing and texture”, she adds.
Bhairavi’s late father Shankar Jaikishan, was the eternal prince of Hindi film music, did she ever toy with the idea of making a career in film and music? “Not films, but if I had a good voice, I would have loved to be a singer”, she says. One of her father’s last compositions- Zindagi Ek Safar Hain Suhana from Andaz, is her favourite composition, and her other favorites include Baharon phool barsaon, Mera joota hai Japani and Aaja sanam.

Opulent, Ornate Bridal Wear

Meticulously crafted, rich & ornate, Pallavi Jaikishan’s expensive creations are worn by the privileged. Her wear is not about trends, but about glamour, shimmer and opulence. Heavily embroidered yet not Bollywood inspired, traditional yet stylish, classic yet sensual. The diva showcased her pink and peach, gold and silver collection at the India Couture Week, Mumbai. The rare look of the clothes and antique jewellery from her personal collection made the ensembles look even more beautiful.
