Bollywood Weddings- how much do they cost?
Jun 30, 2011 Destination Weddings, Wedding People & Planners
The sangeet at the recently organised GVK Reddy wedding in Hyderabad was termed India’s most spectacular not because SRK and a host of b-town stars were there, but also because the Big B and his entire family was there. There was a lot of speculation on how much each star billed the family and one newspaper even reported that Salman Khan was offered Rs 20 crore for his presence (untrue). Here, we present to the best of our ability, how the business of inviting Bollywood stars as guests or performers to a wedding actually works, and what families shell out for a Bollywood theme sangeet.

A-league actors charge between Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore while SRK’s fee is Rs 2 crore. Sources say Akshay Kumar is the most business-savvy when it comes to negotiating, while among the actresses, it’s Katrina Kaif. The actresses fee range between Rs 30 and Rs 45 lakh. Says Wedding Planner Veena Bachani: “The three most sought-after names@ Weddings today are SRK, Salman and Katrina.”
Bachchans senior we are told are an exception in that they don’t regard ‘attending weddings’ a money-making exercise. They only attend weddings of families they are close friends with, like the GVK Reddy’s. And the presumption is that the Bachchans did not charge the Reddys any fee for their presence at the wedding. When families invite just one or two actors or actresses’ they or their Wedding Planners interact and firm up the deal with the Managers of the stars, but if they’re organizing a big bollywood extravaganza they hire the services of specialist firms like the Moranis owned Cineyug or Wizcraft who are considered the most powerful when it comes to getting the dates or the best rates of A-league stars.
Malaika Arora Khan is one of the most sought-after entertainers @ destination weddings in popular locales like Bali, Thailand and Goa. Source say pre Dabanng, Malaika charged Rs 5-6 lakh, and now her fee is around Rs 12 lakh. Besides flying down Malaika in business class and arranging for her stay at a suite, there are the costs of flying down her troupe—manager, choreographer, makeup artist and sometimes a dance troupe, and their fees. Sophie Chowdhary who charges around Rs 3.5 lakh is also popular and so is Yana Gupta.

While the not in the A-league actors/ actresses charge between Rs 3 and 5 lakh, other actresses like Mehak Chahal, Shveta Salve, Mona Singh, are quite popular at the grand yet not grandest destination weddings. They usually charge around Rs 1.5 lakh. But as Veena Bachani informs us the star fees is just a percentage of the spends@ the sangeet. When there is a big sangeet and performances by Bollywood stars there are several other costs like choreography, decor & stage, compere, DJ, music & sound, dancers and lighting—and the typical budget at a big, fat sangeet (not including the venues, food or an international act) hovers around Rs 50 lakh!

Bollywood’s favorite Wedding Planners to create ‘Victorian’ style decor for Lara-Mahesh Wedding
Feb 2, 2011 Celeb Weddings to Watch out for
Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi’s wedding celebrations are at the Taj Fort Aguada and Holiday Village, Goa on February 19th. The Sangeet is on February 18th and while Mahesh’s latest tweet is about his ‘practise’ for the sangeet, Lara announced that she is wearing a Ritu Kumar creation.
The decor for the Wedding events is being done by Dreamz Kraft, which is run by Priti Sidhwani who is Film Producer Ritesh Sidhwani’s sister-in-law. Dreamz Kraft, the favourite Wedding Decor & Wedding Planner of Bollywood families, recently did the decor for Neelam Kothari’s simple wedding at Taj Land’s End and the grand set-ups for Neha Oberoi’s (daughter of Dharam Oberoi) wedding at the same venue. We hear the decor at Lara-Mahesh’s wedding will be very Victorian, in keeping with Lara’s tastes. The invitation cards have a very English design too, with rose patterns and are designed by Delhi-based Entertainment Design Company (EDC) whose most famous wedding clients are Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan.

Oswal’s host Big Fat Sangeet in Ludhiana
Nov 18, 2010 Celebrity Wedding Pictures
Ludhiana and Delhi, the city of the big wedding spenders are talking about the Big Fat Sangeets, where unimaginable amounts have been spent. Industrialist Kamal Oswal’s daughter’s sangeet was held at a farmhouse in Ludhiana on 13th November. Neha Oswal weds Anant Nahata in Delhi on November 29th, and for the first function in Ludhiana, the family hired Mumbai-based design boutique house Studio Neelabh to design and execute a “wow” theme. Aditi and Neelabh, the husband-wife duo who run Studio Neelabh designed a Venetian concept— with huge replicas of Venetian architectures and elements of Venice. The 250 feet long stage was twice the size of the stage of a world-class event and Neelabh and his team of over 500 persons, worked on the design and sets for over two months. Malaika Arora Khan performed at the sangeet, and Delhi-based Kitchen Art took care of all the culinary arrangements. Now if the Sangeet was so grand we wonder how much grander the wedding will be.

Weddings- the National Integration!
Dec 10, 2009 Fashion & Bridal Wear, Marriage & Wedding Trends
Hindustan Times (6th December) featured an interesting article on the unionisation of weddings— North Indian traditions in South Indian, Bengali and Muslim weddings. And how, the North Indian flamboyance is spreading across the country, thanks to bollywood. Much before affluent Bengalis, South Indians and Maharashtrians began organising elaborate Mehendi and Sangeets, brides started opting for newer dress
styles—in the 80’s the Gujarati style drape was popular among non-Gujaratis too. In the 90s some brides from all communities wore a Lehenga Choli for the post wedding function. This decade Mehendi and Sangeet functions are a must-have for all bollywood-fan families.
Inter-caste weddings and frequent travel to cities/ countries have made Indians more aware of the ‘best’ or ‘fun’ elements in wedding traditions of different communities. And those with more independence and resources are opting for a wedding inspired by different elements. And since the big, fat Indian wedding became synonymous with the nouveau riche, a segment of people have opted for smaller, more personal weddings.
2010 onwards, elaborate lehengas will continue to be the popular choice thanks to ambitious designers whose bread-and-butter is bridal wear and who continually reinvent the versatile creation. But a select few designers (and maybe even international brands) will target the globally travelled bride to offer her wear with western silhouettes. To get a sense of what fashion forward brides will wear in the next few years check out the wedding wear of Romita Maitra, a half-Bengali, half-Konkani bride who married a South Indian boy—for the pre and post wedding functions she wore a mix of the subtle and the bright, understated and bling- a yellow Neeta Lulla saree, a salwar kameez by a Pakistani designer and a contemporary Shahab Durazi saree. For the wedding she wore a kanjeevaram with a Bengali crown and for the reception she looked elegant in a long fuschia Dolce & Gabbana gown.
