Shelley says, "I’m born and raised in Canada. My husband Neelesh is from India. We had a long distance relationship at first with him being in India and US but after we got married, we lived in California, India, and Toronto. I started to miss my family and friends so we have decided to call Vancouver our home for now. I work as a Business Analyst for a Telecommunications company and Neelesh is a software engineer."

What I wore for different wedding functions
Both of us hail from very different backgrounds; my father is Sikh-Punjabi from India, my mother is Muslim from Fiji, and Neelesh’s family is Jain. Instead of having 3 separate ceremonies we decided on a non-traditional ‘East meets West’ type of wedding. For the engagement I chose a light sequined sari in two-tone green and pink to reflect the beautiful summer colors in my city. For the outdoor mehendi ceremony I selected a red, silk salwar suit with a heavily sequined dupatta. For the wedding I wore a bright fuchsia and gold 2-piece wedding dress. For the reception I wanted something elegant and very Indian so I chose a bright green sari with gold threads woven into it and a contrast peacock-blue blouse.

My Wedding Day Look
My makeup and hair was done by a friend who is a wedding consultant. She did a fabulous job keeping all my wedding colors and themes in mind. For the wedding ceremony I had my hair in an up-do with a few sleek bangs to frame my face. For the reception, I wanted my swarovski crystal jewellery set to really stand out so all my hair was pinned back with peacock feathers to match the sari.

Where I shopped
My wedding ceremony dress was custom made by a bridal dress shop in East Vancouver. For all of my Indian-wedding needs I shopped along the strip of Vancouver’s famous ‘Main Street-Indian Market’. They have some amazing bridal shops such as Frontier Bridal Boutique and Sunny’s Bridal Gallery. I drew a lot of inspiration for my wedding outfits from my favourite designers Manish Malhotra and Rocky S (hence the feathers). My favourite purchase, from a recent trip to India, is a stunning shell and crystal bead evening bag by Manish Malhotra and I love it because it goes with everything!

My advice for brides-to-be
My advice for brides to be is: Don’t fret if things don't go perfectly. You will still be able to remember your wedding day as one of the best days of your life and no one will notice if something doesn’t go exactly as planned. It’s your day, enjoy it and live in the moment because you will never get those moments back.
