Sayee and Kamala

Sayee and Kamala's temple wedding in Kansas City combined rituals of a Tamil and Malayalam wedding

About the Couple

Kamala grew up in Calcutta, went to school in Boston and is now working towards a career in teaching kids Mathematics. Trichy-born Sayee, grad schooled in Dallas and moved to Boston where he works in Technology. "We met through a mutual friend (thank you Nishat and Rubab!). From the moment we met it was obvious that we were made for each other."

The Engagement
Says Sayee: "I proposed to Kamala knowing fully well what her answer would be. After our decision we immediately called our parents to tell them the good news. We got engaged in Kansas City since Kamala's parents live there. It was a small, no-fuss event sans fanfare at a Hindu temple in Lackman road. Our engagement website www.weddingsutra.com/SayeeKamala was very useful in spreading the word to all our friends."

Wedding Details
The wedding was on May 30th, 2004 at the same Temple where the engagement was held. Says Sayee: "Kamala and me are not very religious, I guess we are unitarian universalists but we still had a Hindu religious wedding complete with Vedic chants. We handpicked the rituals from each of our cultures (Tamil and Malayalam) and created a program card that detailed all the rituals. The whole process was a learning experience for us as well. We had a reception at the same temple followed by a second reception in Boston."

"Our Wedding Planning Advice"
- Try to relish each and every moment of your wedding.
- Avoid inviting too many guests.
- When deciding on which rituals to include, educate yourself on the process and pick rituals that convey a special meaning to you. Also spend some time getting to know the priest who is conducting your ceremony. He or she will be able to explain things and personalize the process for you and your families.
