- Handmade
items or carvings:
Always get a special appreciation. The closer you are to the
couple, the more personal the gift can get. Chances are, if
the couple are your good friends, you would know their taste
in colours. You could paint vases, plates, mugs or even paperweights.
That would add a special and personal touch.
- Sapling:
A little offbeat but a great alternative to a bouquet of flowers.
Would surely be of use even in a city like Mumbai, where greens
can add a special touch to the balcony or the windowsills.
Though it's based on the cliched concept of 'watching them
grow as a couple', it's not quite that common a wedding gift.

Personally,
we would always love a paid-for vacation.
A weekend retreat to Goa, or even to a not-so-glamorous Mahabaleshwar
might go down well with eager and energetic couples who may
want to enjoy several honeymoon trips in the first year itself.
-
Customised
gear:
Monogrammed haversacks for trekking enthusiasts. Tea-cozies.
Travel bags. Matching caps. Monogramming is an area that allows
a lot of freedom. You have the couple's monograms with either
their initials, or individual monograms with the initials
of the intended user. This of course can go either way and
customized gear should be gifted to people whose tastes can
be estimated with some degree of accuracy.

Lottery
Tickets:
If you're on a realy tight budget. A hundred rupees might
buy a LOT of lottery tickets. And look at the odds. If they
get lucky, they might get a BIG fortune out of it. Of course,
it would certainly make a good ADD ON to a relatively sober
gift.
