Male contraceptives at a glance

Contraception is not just a woman's headache. It's also the men's responsibility. And the choices for them are increasingly many.

1. THE CONDOM, OF COURSE

The condom has become the most revolutionary tool in birth control around the world. Strongly advised as the one and only way to have 'safe sex' in the life and times of AIDS, the condom is now more than just a contraceptive. Ideally, it should be used everytime by every couple.

What Is It?:
A latex, polyurethane or animal-tissue sheath placed over the penis. The sheath collects the sperm upon ejaculation so it does not enter the uterus. These days there are condoms of various varieties. They not only come in different hues, textures (ribbed, smooth or gel-like), they also come in different flavours! No kidding. Opt for a whisky flavoured or a hot spicy one!

The Reported Benefits:
The best line that was ever used recently for advocating the condom is "Earlier I was used to control births, now I am used to control deaths." This says it all. Latex condoms are the best protection against AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. It is known to be successful varying from 64 per cent to 97 per cent. Its effectiveness dips because of its misuse. It should not be reused at all. And of course, the instructions for its use should be carefully followed.

The Downside:
Some people report inconvenience or loss of sensation with the use of condom. Some others may be allergic to latex. There is also the chance that a condom may tear during intercourse and render the precaution useless.

If You Use The Condom…
Make sure, that you don't use any Vaseline, lubricant jellies, baby oil or hand lotions along with it. They contribute to its tearing. Stick to high-quality brands. The safest bet is latex condoms with the Nonoxynol-9 spermicide.

2. THE WITHDRAWAL METHOD

Withdrawing just before ejaculation is another contraceptive method. But it is taking a huge chance everytime, where any man could goof up on the exact timing. Besides, there is the possibility of premature ejaculation, which is more common than most people think. Lastly, it spoils the fun, giving a certain edginess and apprehension. And it offers no protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

3. OTHER FUTURISTIC CHOICES

The Male Pill:
Trials for the male mill have proven to be highly successful. This pill is a weekly dose of testosterone, which reduces the sperm count.

Vaccine:
These are chemicals or hormones, which can be delivered via a series of injections.

Soluble condoms:
These are condoms made of polyurethane or Tactylon for people who are allergic to latex while also providing protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

Implants:
These are implanted in the upper arm. A peptide analogue would suppress sperm production and diminish sex drive. The second chemical would maintain libido.
