A Pre-wedding Shoot with a Difference

By Jaspreet Soni

As the trend goes, pre-wedding shoots are all about the couple. But when Priyanka and Amit Barot of Amit Barot Photography conceptualized the pre-wedding shoot with a bride-to-be and her family and that too in their wedding fineries, it touch a chord too many. Priyanka Barot elaborates, “Our concept was inspired by ‘Wedding Sutra on Location’ which helps Brides-to-be to prep up for the D-day. This shoot with Nupur Agarwal and her family was one of a kind and we photographed the entire family in a very relaxed and comfortable environment and they enjoyed the photo shoot thoroughly.”

The shoot took place at Nupur’s home in Ahmedabad. As her home got refurnished before the wedding, the living room made for the ideal setting. Being a Sabyasachi fan, they decided to do up the living room in his signature style. Nupur says, “Me, my mother and my sister are ardent Sabyasachi fans so we knew what look we wanted. The drawing room walls were painted in burgundy, cream and burgundy based toile de jouy curtains were brought from USA and the furniture was sourced from Good Earth (Mumbai).”

Nupur was motivated to do this shoot after seeing all the photos of WeddingSutra on Location and what she figured at weddings she had attended in the last few years.  She says: “At all the weddings I could see that the bride’s parents were busy running around for the preparation of the baarat and other stuff. In such a rushed situation, the bride hardly gets few minutes to get family portraits done with her parents and siblings, and later while viewing albums I always wondered how the girl couldn’t even get decent family pictures. This is when I and my mother decided that when the time of my wedding comes, we’ll get our family portraits clicked before so we don’t have to worry about pictures at the wedding.”

Nupur says, “For the shoot I got ready exactly in the same manner that I had planned for the actual wedding. It served as a dress, make-up and hair rehearsal, just like what WeddingSutra on Location is. While getting ready I could realize all the stuff that I had to take care of for the actually wedding day- the fitting of the garment, my footwear and how comfortable I felt in it with my attire. The shoot was a long one and hence my footwear was put to test. Wearing all the fineries on the bridal outfit helped me realize a lot of things like at what length I should tie the emerald strings, how low or high my maatha pati should be, for how long would I be able to wear the really heavy earrings etc. Although I had references of the look that I wanted, the actual trial along with jewellery and make-up made it all very visual before the big day.”

Nupur’s family too got a chance to have a dress rehearsal. Says Nupur: “My father was not sure about his outfits and he had kept few options open to decide on the main day, but the shoot helped him finalize his mind. My mother and my sister could not wear the clothes that they had bought for my wedding as those had not been delivered to us by the time of the shoot. So we decided that they would wear their respective bridal outfits. My elder sister who got married 6 years back too had picked her bridal outfit from Sabyasachi. On the shoot day there were two Sabyasachi brides at home- me and my sister. My mother had carefully preserved her 36 year old bridal outfit and with some repairs, it looked brand new. So there were three ‘brides’ in this setting.”

For Nupur, this shoot turned out to be the integral part of her wedding. It happened two weeks before the wedding so everyone was relaxed and it was an enjoyable photo shoot and an intimate pre-wedding celebration.
