From behind the lens to being in focus: Co-Founder of Vows & Tales – Abhit Jhanji shares his home wedding experience amidst social distancing

For many of us, wedding photographers are magicians who can turn a simple moment to the ordinary eye into an evocative frame packed with depth and emotion. But what happens when a lensman goes from being behind the camera to being in front of it, in full focus? Abhit Jhanji, of WeddingSutra Favorite – Vows & Tales, wed Rupali in an intimate ceremony at home while observing social distancing. He shares his experience here.

1. As a wedding photographer, how did you feel about being in front of the camera?
“Being behind the camera and in front of it are two dramatically different experiences. When I was in front of the lens myself, I realized showcasing what you truly feel with a camera facing you isn’t that easy. However, my experience with all my lovely clients came in handy, as I knew how to make the process comfortable and candid for my camera-shy bride to ensure that she looked happy, calm and out of the world.”

2. How did you manage social distancing in your wedding? What measures did you take to ensure safety?
“To follow the rules and regulations the government has put in place in the ongoing scenario, we planned the wedding with a guest list of just 25 people. The beautiful floral decoration was done two days prior to the wedding in order to avoid any risk of getting infected. We made sure that the venue of our wedding, our home, was equipped with everything required to keep everyone safe such as infrared thermometers, gloves, masks, and bottles of sanitizer. A house staff was there at the entrance to sanitize all the wedding guests. What made the experience smooth and relaxed was that we knew all our vendors personally and were completely assured of their safety and hygiene measures.”

3. What were your most special moments of the wedding?
“The most special moment from our wedding was when Rupali and I laid eyes on each other for the first time as a bride and groom. It was an incredible feeling, and we truly came to terms with the fact that even though this wasn’t the celebration we had originally envisioned, it was a celebration of our love over all else.”

4. One of the things a bride – and even a groom – look forward to on their wedding day is dressing up like a princess and prince. Tell us about your wedding outfits for your intimate home wedding.
“Since our original wedding was planned for April, we already had our outfits in place. Even though our wedding had been scaled down, the one thing we didn’t have to change was our dream outfits and our desire to look royal wearing them. Rupali’s outfit was designed by Rahul Kapoor from Ludhiana, whereas my outfit was from Royalista, Ludhiana.”

5. Scaling down pre-planned preparations and tying the knot in the current reality is a testament to true love. What would you remember the most from the experience?
“The most memorable thing about the experience was how relaxed and at ease we all were. Big wedding celebrations, inspite of being a grand experience, often get stressful with so much preparations and planning. At home, amidst our family, we experienced a very different side to a wedding. One of the things that stayed with me the most was seeing my bride smile and laugh uninhibitedly, a sight not seen often in large weddings out of shyness or even social expectations. It was a day of no worries or stress, only smiles.”
