Krishma and Dhiraj’s Platinum Love Story
Sydney-based Marketing Professional Krishma Sood instantly connected with Dhiraj Bhojwani at a mutual friend’s destination wedding in 2015. A Finance professional from Singapore who has built his career extensively working with start-ups, he was drawn to her friendly nature and found himself opening up to her with great ease. Intrigued by their interaction, they couldn’t shake the feeling as they returned home, so when shortly afterward a great work opportunity in Singapore came-a-knocking on Krishma’s door, it felt like the universe’s affirmation of their relationship.
As their love bloomed, Krishma was welcomed into Dhiraj’s life and family as one of their own. Dhiraj shares, “From the moment we started dating in 2015, it was a whirlwind of memories and milestones that bound us together and laid the foundation for our relationship. I immersed her in my family and was amazed at the way she not only bonded with them but also helped make my relationships with them stronger. Whether it was helping my siblings with their wedding planning or pushing me to reach for my goals, making travel memories across Asia, or just relishing the day-to-day together, her generosity of spirit, work ethic, and calming influence made me a happier, more confident person. My life was infinitely more fulfilling after she came into it, so when after 4 years of togetherness she got an opportunity to take an amazing job and be close to her family in Sydney, I knew it was my turn to support her in every way I could”. Krishma reflects, “In today’s evolving world of equal opportunities, situations like these often remind you of the perception of gender roles most people still have, and this move showed me that I was with the right person!”
With exciting new jobs and their upcoming nuptials on the horizon, Krishma and Dhiraj were excited for the next chapter of their lives. But while Dhiraj’s move to Sydney was a major change on its own, it was the least of the challenges that came their way, as shortly after the Pandemic hit and Sydney shut down. Living alone in a new country confined to your house and unable to meet the person you moved for can test a relationship, but they knew if they could get through that, they could handle all life had in store for them. Dhiraj shares, “The homesickness and stress from worrying for my loved ones back home, solitude, and derailed wedding plans hit in waves, one after another. Krishma and her family stepped up for me through it all. She not only helped me adjust to life in Australia amidst all the challenges of the new normal but also network and make new friends. She always made me feel loved and involved in her family moments and traditions so I never felt the absence of my own.”
Krishma adds, “Even though our wedding plans got pushed and we couldn’t live together for a while as we had planned, we took meaningful steps to strengthen our bond. While many other things were out of our hands, we didn’t wait to start building a life together and invested in our first home. Setting it up together made our future feel like reality instead of a distant dream, and brought us even close together. It also helped Dhiraj settle in and feel at home, secure in the knowledge that good things were waiting for us! The sense of safety and comfort we got from each other helped us balance the expectations of our families as well, and figure out what worked for us.”
She continues “Coming to terms with the upheaval in our wedding plans wasn’t easy for me. Dhiraj’s gentle reassurance and little gestures of love helped me focus on the big picture, and feel gratitude for our health, our togetherness, and all the things we had going for us. What could have been a tough couple of years turned out to be the best for both of us, as understanding each other’s troubles brought us closer, and our accomplishments felt even sweeter when shared. 2021-2022 was a windfall year for me professionally, winning 30 under 30 for my field in Australia, 50 under 30 globally, and getting offered the prestigious Marketing Academy Scholarship. While the accolades were humbling on their own, Dhiraj’s joy and pride felt like all the validation I needed.”
The turbulent times of the Pandemic helped Krishma and Dhiraj forge a stronger bond, as they learned to communicate better and embrace each other’s quirks and differences. Juggling work-from-home and stringent movement restrictions in Australia, they also learned how to balance spending quality time together with giving each other space. Most of all, they came to appreciate that while grand gestures are all well and good, stepping in and stepping up for each other when needed is what shows how much you care. Krishma shares, “Him peeking in on a crazy work day just to check if I have eaten makes me feel more loved than fancy declarations ever could. He cherishes me for who I am, while also making me want to be better, and that is all you could hope for in a true partner.” Dhiraj in turn adds, “Krishma’s love and undying support have helped me be more confident and joyful in every sphere of life. Be it helping me with my CV to secure a great job when I was moving, lending her fashion advice when I needed it, inspiring me to improve my health, or even patiently helping me master our wedding dance so I felt at my best in front of our guests, she always has my back.”
