The sky was the limit for Vidush who popped the question to Sonam in Turkey
How they met
They clicked from the start after bumping into each other at a common friend’s birthday party on March 29, 2013 in San Francisco. Naturally, both Sonam and Vidush remember the date well. Vidush, who hails from New Delhi met Mumbai-based Sonam in California.
“We went on our first date a few months after we met. We soon realised that our enthusiasm for life and travel was mutual and were inseparable after that. Since then, we have travelled together across the world – from Belize in South America to Hawaii, US Virgin Islands, New Zealand, Fiji and Malaysia!” recounts Sonam happily.
How he proposed
This globe-trotting couple travelled to Turkey to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was a surprise trip that Vidush had planned for Sonam. “Little did I know that this was more than just a romantic getaway,” Sonam says, adding, “We were enjoying a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia in the central Anatolia region of Turkey when Vidush went down on his knees and popped the question with a beautiful ring.”
Looking at the slick wedding proposal video, it seems like Vidush executed a perfectly smooth, no-hiccups plan. But there was a lot of meticulous planning that went into organising the event, and capturing it through photos and video for posterity. For example, the confines of a hot air balloon’s basket are cramped, making it challenging to stage or shoot a proposal. But that’s where technology came to the rescue thanks to hidden GoPro cameras mounted cleverly over and around the basket. The grand expanse of the moving lunar-like landscape below contrasted beautifully with the cosy basket that cocooned the couple.
However, there were two other people in the hot air balloon who were privy to the proposal up close and personal – a professional photographer and a violinist who Vidush has hired to play the popular ballad ‘Kabhi Toh Baadal Barse’ sung by Arijit Singh from the movie Jackpot.
This wedding proposal shoot was ingenious in the way it captured a small space creatively and spatially – without missing a detail, be it clear close-ups of the ring, bouquet handover, loving hugs, passionate kisses, stunning backdrops, surprised expressions and even obligatory shots with the talented Turkish violinist.
If that were not enough, Vidush had even organized a sunset photoshoot on terra firma the same day. This photoshoot, whose images were incorporated into the video, showcased the splendor of the sunset against the mesmerising volcanic rock formations. Sonam rocked a formal LBD while Vidush looked dapper in his formal ensemble in some of the shots.
It was a perfect stage for this adventure-loving duo who like trying out new things. They now have more than one reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th every year.
Instead of doing separate bachelor and bachelorette trips before the wedding, the couple will be going to cancun, Mexico for their combined Jack and Jill trip along with their friends in July this year!
There is another big date for Sonam and Vidush coming up! The two lovebirds are getting married on December 17th this year in the beautiful Malaysian island of Langkawi. And in keeping with the spirit of ‘social media weddings’, the #hashtag has already been selected – #JUJUkaSona inspired by their nicknames – Juju for Vidush and Sona for Sonam. We can’t wait to hear where they are flying for their honeymoon!
