This couple chose DIY decor for their lockdown wedding featuring fresh blooms and gilded candles

Drawing up fresh plans for a wedding after everything has been put in place is always a challenge, but Aashna and Rishabh overcame all hurdles (such as the groom’s ensemble not arriving in time!) at their home wedding during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shot by WeddingSutra Favorite – The Wedding Shades, the wedding album captures all the bonding and bonhomie of this intimate affair. Here, bride Aashna shares some highlights of the festivities.

A cousin unwittingly played Cupid in Rishabh and Aashna’s love story which she recalls, “Rishabh and I first became friends through my cousin who lived in the same residential complex as him. After knowing each other as friends, we decided to start dating, and after two years we decided to tie the knot. Since our ‘gordhana’ (engagement ceremony among Gujaratis) was already done, I wasn’t really expecting a proposal from him, but I was absolutely stunned when he popped the question on a beach in Thailand during my best friend’s wedding. It was truly a beautiful moment as we took in a dramatic sunset at the secluded beach and relished champagne as relaxing music played in the background.”

Even though the couple had planned to host their wedding at a posh hotel in Mumbai in June 2020, the pandemic compelled them to cancel their plans. The duo, however, quickly came to terms with the situation and decided to go ahead with a more close-knit arrangement. Sharing her experience when it came to planning a wedding under such unique circumstances, Aashna says, “We had initially planned a wedding at Trident Hotel but after the pandemic started spreading its branches in Mumbai, we decided to cancel our plans. But eventually, we came to the conclusion that there was no point waiting for things to settle down. We chose to look at the positive side of the situation, and instead, decided to stick to our original date with a homebound wedding which would allow us to spend time together during the lockdown. The number of guests, of course, was limited but we made sure that everyone joined in via Zoom. Additionally, we even managed to squeeze in a few online mehndi, bachelorette, and bachelor parties.”

“I had already planned my outfits well in advance and placed an order for them in February itself. But with the pandemic throwing delivery schedules for a toss, it was through luck and the sheer determination of our designers that everything came on time and fit perfectly. In fact, my wedding outfit reached just three hours before the wedding! In Rishabh’s case, however, we were in utter panic as we hadn’t placed an order. But one of my designer friends saved the day as she gifted us a grey/sage hued raw silk achkan from her collection which fit him well and matched my outfit too!”

“For the mehndi, we chose my maternal uncle’s place while the wedding was hosted at my house. Keeping all precautions in mind, we made sure that contact was kept to a minimum and hence decided to DIY the decor. With the flowers for the decor being delivered just a few hours before the wedding, we made every moment count as me, my mom and a few other family members pitched in to dress up our house with vibrant blooms. Being an interior designer, this task proved to be a cakewalk for my mom as she planned the floral arrangements with zero difficulties. Also, my sister and sister-in-law applied beautiful henna patterns on my hands. I, too, joined in on the fun, and drew henna patterns on the palms of my family members!”

Last but not the least, Aashna shares her smooth experience with The Wedding Shades team who impressed the couple with the results. “Working with The Wedding Shades was awesome and easy. The team adapted well to the situation and everyone came fully prepared with masks and gloves. The entire process was enjoyable as we didn’t have to pose too much and they captured each moment beautifully.”
