5 Ways to Deal with Dark Circles Before your Wedding

Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert Preeti Chotai shares five handy tips to deal with dark circles

There are different types of ‘dark circles’ with varying and sometimes multiple causes. While many dark circles are hereditary, some other causes for them include poor diet, lack of sleep, ageing and allergies. Treatments can be as simple as applying an under-eye cream or as extreme as injectable fillers. There are also some natural remedies you can try at home. In the meantime, Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert Preeti Chotai shares five handy tips to deal with your dark circles so you can flaunt a perfect face at your wedding.

1. Identify the cause
In order to treat or reduce dark circles, it is important to identify what type they are. In order to do so, simply press on the skin under your eyes and release. If the skin under your fingers lightens, then the dark circles are due to blood vessels showing through the skin. If the skin does not lighten, then the dark circles are probably due to hereditary factors or sun exposure, or both.

2. Prevention pays
If your dark circles are due to blood vessels showing through your skin, your skin is thin/thinning. This is very common as we age or as a result of a bad diet and unhealthy lifestyle. Allergies can also cause the blood vessels underneath the eyes to dilate, worsening the dark circles – and an over-the-counter antihistamine will help reduce this immediately. Thin skin under the eyes is usually a sign of dehydration so increasing your water intake will also help.

If your dark circles are hereditary or due to sun exposure, you need to start using sunscreen with a high level of SPF right up to your lower lash line every day. Big sunglasses also help protect the fragile skin under the eyes. Protect that area as much as possible and avoid any friction to the skin to avoid the circles getting darker.

3. Treat right
To treat and thicken the skin under the eyes, massaging a small amount of almond oil around the socket bone (be careful not to get any into the eyes) every night will help. Almond oil is a great natural moisturiser and also a natural source of retinol. Retinol can help build collagen and plump and thicken skin. The thicker the skin under your eyes, the less the blood vessels will show through. Retinoid eye creams also have the same benefits. For darker circles; natural bleaching agents in potatoes can help lighten the skin around the eyes, so use potato juice (grate and squeeze a potato to extract its juices) or thick potato slices on the skin for a minimum of 15 minutes a day (can be left overnight) to naturally lighten the skin. Eye creams containing hydroquinone, licorice or kojic acid will also help to lighten the pigmentation and improve the dark circles. Try the Lakme Absolute Perfect Radiance Lightening Serum which contains precious micro crystals and Vita-Resorcinol that help reduce the formation and transfer of skin darkening pigments – and this can be used all over the face and neck too.

4. Cover and Conceal
Since dark circles due to thin skin under the eyes usually have a blue-ish tinge, they are best covered with a yellow-toned corrector under your concealer or a yellow-based concealer. Tap on to the delicate under eye skin without causing unnecessary friction to the sensitive area. Many times, pigmentation under the eyes is dark with a brownish appearance. This is best covered by a peach-toned corrector applied under your concealer or a peach based concealer. Those with darker skin tones/ circles may want to try an orange-toned corrector/concealer. For a busy event like a wedding, always keep an under-eye concealer such as the readily available Lakme Absolute White Intense Concealer Stick at hand. It contains Vitamin B and SPF 20 and is light enough to allow your skin to breathe yet provides effective coverage.

5. Expert treatments
See a dermatologist or skin experts like Kaya Skin Clinic to explore further treatments available for dark circles in preparation for your big day. One option is the injection of hyaluronic acid/fat into the skin under the eyes to plump the skin and improve the appearance of blood vessels. Dermatologists can also use lasers to minimise the darkness of the skin over multiple sessions, but not all dermatologists offer this treatment. Research your local clinics to find out more and always use a recommended dermatologist for any cosmetic procedures!
