The NRI Bride’s Guide to Trousseau Shopping in Delhi!

London based stylist Jasmina Barwani puts together a wedding trousseau guide for NRI brides based on her experience and research.

Bride-to-be Jasmina Bharwani had to quit her job as an investment banker in London to plan her big fat destination wedding in Spain. Spread over three days, she and her investment banker fiancé, Karan Puri, chose a set of venues with the express purpose of giving their guests a taste of Spain; a welcome dinner at the trendy Ramses, in Madrid, a classic, gorgeous Mehndi and Sangeet at the iconic Ritz Hotel and a beautiful wedding and reception at a jet-set favourite, the Villa Magna Hotel.

Jasmina’s love for the finer things in life came through in the décor, styling and her trousseau – whether it was the gota-work white anarkali with gold and silver embroidery, her custom designed sangeet outfit or her sequined wedding lehenga. She loves Delhi, arguably India’s fashion capital, for the access to great design houses. She suggests visiting multi-design platforms to help differentiate between different styles and then flagship stores once you’ve decided and offers a range of accessory, jewellery and style options from classic to contemporary.

With all her experience, it’s no surprise to know that Jasmina has decided to pursue her real passion; she now produces beauty tutorials, provides style tips and reviews products at her eponymous site www.jasminabharwani.com and YouTube channel. Here, the bride tells other brides-to-be about what worked while she planned for her big day.

As an NRI, deciding where to do your bridal shopping can be quite stressful. My recommendation would be to choose a destination where you have either friends or family or a city you are quite familiar with, as this will really help you navigate the myriad options there. However, it is also important to do your research and identify the designers and stores you are most interested in. For example, if your family is in Bengaluru and most of the stores you like are in Mumbai then you are probably better off going to Mumbai. My recommendation, if you can make it work, would be to head to Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata.

I did all my shopping in Delhi where my husband’s family is. It helped that most of the designers I wanted to see were based in the city.

As I mentioned in my previous post I did a lot of online research before I went to Delhi, in order to have an idea of the catalogues as well as a list of addresses. I researched blogs like WeddingSutra, browsed Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration and when I liked something I tried to track down where the person got it from. I also spoke to friends and family for recommendations and most importantly I hunted down the hashtags for all the designers I loved to see, as it can be difficult to get pictures online of their latest collections.

I have put together this guide based on my experience and research and I hope it will be as useful for you as it was for me!
