Duresh Kumar and Sherina Melwani grew up in Taiwan, studied in the U.S, then moved to different countries (Duresh to Singapore and Sherina to China), and now live and work in Singapore. They tied the knot at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, Thailand.
Duresh Kumar and Sherina Melwani grew up in Taiwan. “Taipei’s Indian community is like one big family and that is how we first met, and from thereon we continued to be best of friends”, say Duresh and Sherina. Having studied in the U.S they then moved to different countries (Duresh to Singapore and Sherina to China), they now live and work in Singapore.
Wedding Venue
The duo knew that they wanted their wedding to be in Thailand from the word Go, because they were mesmerized by its beauty. They considered Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand, but finally decided on the JW Marriot resort in Khao Lak because of the beautiful beachfront and the pool. “Khao lak”, says Sherina, “has an abundance of nice hotels like The Sands and Casa de la Flora to name a few. But JW Marriott’s pool and water structure is what set it apart from the rest for us. The entire property is connected by one waterway so you can pretty much swim from one room to another!”
Wedding Planning
Planning a gorgeous wedding comes with its share of fun and stress. “For me, the most stressful part was finalizing on the outfits and the decor!” says Sherina. “Fortunately, there were too many fun memories attached with the celebration as well. I looked at it as a three day party with ceremonies in between, so then the stress was forgotten,” gushes the bride.
Hiring a team of wedding planners helped the couple in a big way. Our wedding planning was done by ‘I Do Etc.’ which is a Thailand based wedding management company,” says Sherina. “If you’re getting married in Thailand, hiring the services of an experienced Wedding Planner is quite essential because they ensure everything runs smoothly and on time without you having to worry. Also, they always have a backup plan. We definitely couldn’t have managed without ‘I Do Etc’!”
Wedding Functions
Duresh and Sherina’s wedding celebrations encompassed 6 functions spread over 3 days. The first function was the welcome dinner-cum-engagement ceremony where they exchanged rings after which the religious ceremony took place. Later that night was a Gatsby themed party, which featured Charleston dancers for all the youngsters in the group.
The next morning was a Brazilian carnival theme Mehndi ceremony with Samba dancers.
The Sangeet, on the same evening was Mughal themed.
The next morning, they had their traditional Sindhi religious ceremonies called ‘the Ghari’. The main event i.e. the wedding function was held in the evening, set against the backdrop of the sunset on the beach.
Post that, they had a ‘gown and tux’ theme Wedding Reception.
Wedding Vendors
Says Sherina, “Looking back, we are quite happy with all our vendors’ services and truly thank them for making our wedding day a very memorable one. A special thanks to our photographers and wedding film makers ‘Knot in Focus’ for capturing every moment of it so beautifully!”
