Gayatri Moolchandani and Manoj Chandra – Langkawi, Malaysia

India born Gayatri Moolchandani lived between Nigeria and the UK when she met Manoj from Philippines who now works in Australia. After an extraordinary proposal, both decided to seal their relationship forever in Langkawi, Malaysia.

India born Gayatri Moolchandani lived between Nigeria and the UK when she met Manoj from Philippines who now works in Australia. “Manoj and I met on Facebook since we had lot of common friends there! We started chatting after I got a poke notification from him, and I poked him back right after. We soon started speaking on the phone, chatting extensively on Whatsapp, and had extra long phone calls and skype sessions every other day.” Around three months later, Manoj flew down to London to meet Gayatri in person. She says ‘Manoj was in London for a fortnight and we went out to different places everyday. On the last day of his stay, we went out for lunch before his evening flight. When we got done, the waiter gave me the bill. I looked at it and was wondering what to do with it. At the back of the bill it said, ‘Will you marry me?’ with two glasses of champagne! Obviously, I said Yes!’

Gayatri writes about her destination wedding at The Westin Resort & Spa, Langkawi.

Wedding Venue

Manoj and I were looking for a beautiful resort destination that would allow for a relaxing holiday for all our guests, as well an elegant venue for to host the functions. Apart from that, we wanted a place that had previously hosted a Sindhi wedding, had cooperative staff and had a good variety of food. With these factors in mind, we considered a few resorts in Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines, but The Westin Resort & Spa in Langkawi, Malaysia stood out from all, and we felt had a lot more to offer.

The Wedding Planner

We both live far away from Malaysia, and it would not have been possible for us to fly back and forth to organize the wedding ourselves, so we hired the services of Shehnaiyan Wedding Planning & Management Services who are based in Malaysia itself. Our experience with them was absolutely wonderful! The owner, Keshika Advani, has done a lot of Sindhi weddings in the past, and she knew exactly what we wanted. We were regularly in touch with her to share different ideas about the decor. We could only imagine then what it would look like, and in reality it was simply beautiful! Keshika and her team put in a lot of effort in making sure our wedding was perfect, and they took great care of all our guests to ensure they were comfortable.

Wedding Events

Malaysian theme Welcome Dinner
The Welcome dinner was held by the hotel pool side, and was inspired by the Malaysian culture- we had batik table decors, Malaysian food, local dancers and fire-eaters. I wore a Violet gown with red & gold embroidery for the occasion, as I wanted something that reflected the Malaysian and the Indian look. Post the welcome dinner, we held a neon theme after-party at the club called ‘Club MG’.

Peacock Theme- Mehndi & Sangeet Night
The theme was tradition-inspired where the decor was in colours of green, teal and blue, and each table adorned huge peacock feather center pieces with crystals. The evening featured acts by different dancers and performances by family and friends. For this function, I wore a pink, mustard and purple lehenga from a designer in Jaipur that I loved as soon as I saw it. I paired it with colorful bangles and a polki set.

Beach Wedding Ceremony
For the mandap, we wanted something grand that had a mix of a Western and traditional look. We eventually chose an open square-shaped mandap, which was decorated with lots of red and white flowers and with crystals all over it. I wore a bright red lehenga with intricate gold embroidery for the ceremony, and accessorized it with heavy diamond jewellery.

Happily Ever After theme- Reception
The decor at the Reception was all pink and white. We had pink and white floral center pieces on every table, a Cinderella style carriage that was decorated with lights and crystals, and a ‘Happily ever after’ wallpaper set on stage.
