Jill and Niraj, Barcelona, Spain

A heady mix of Indian, Spanish and American cultures marked the stunning wedding of Jill and Niraj at a historic location in Barcelona, Spain

The setting of this lavish and lovingly-planned wedding of Jill and Niraj was all about history, grandeur, old and the new. Held in the beautiful 12th-century Castell de Sant Marcal and Cavas Codorniu in Barcelona, this wedding was all about picture-perfect frames in gardens, caves and castle ramparts. Bride Jill shares more details below…

About us
“Our families have known each other for long. But it was perhaps our friendship that eventually culminated into a relationship.”

Wedding Venues
“We wanted to our wedding venue to reflect our Indian tradition with a bit of history and innovation, so we chose the Castell de Sant Marcal and Cavas Codorniu in Barcelona, Spain, for our wedding functions. These provided a great setting of an ancient winery against a castle backdrop for both our wedding and reception functions. We also wanted our wedding to reflect the juxtaposition of the old and new, and we knew we had made the right choice when it came to a wedding venue when we saw the location. Also, most our friends and family members reside in Spain, so it was very convenient for them too.”

Wedding Functions

Mehndi
“My mehndi truly felt like a metamorphosis – the designs were inspired by Hindu mythology and were very intricately drawn on my hands and feet. As the artists dexterously placed lines of cool, malleable mehndi on my hands, the intoxicating smell lulled me into a euphoric state. We also had some special activities lined up for our guests during the mehndi function wherein we introduced them to a vibrant fusion of Indian, Spanish, and American culture. The inspiration for the mehndi came from Southern Spain. The décor for the function was inspired by Moorish architecture and Granada’s Generalife Gardens with dreamy lanterns, foraged foliage and intricately designed tablescapes that encapsulated the different elements of nature.”

Sangeet
“Our sangeet which was held at the Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos hotel’s poolside. The function featured a mix of cuisine, music, art, and dance from Spain and India. We deliberately kept the environmental details and décor clean and minimal in order to let our guests enjoy the rhythm and flavor of the festivities.”

Wedding
We wanted our wedding to be a testament to the spiritual life together. So we welcomed our loved ones by creating a warm environment and introducing them to yummy food, creative lighting, and some foot-tapping music. We were certain Ginny Au was the right person to anchor the design/planning process as she connected with us aesthetically. Niraj’s baraat was the most beautiful visual as I saw him dance his way towards me. In all, the ceremony was a beautiful showcase of our tradition and rituals.

Reception
“We organized for an outdoor reception where the guests could soak in the beauty of the expansive grounds of Cavas Codorniu while subtle music played in the background. When the sun set, we moved indoors for a dinner that involved international cuisine and unlimited cocktails! We even danced under the sweet smell of orchids and the rhythmic beats of drums till dawn. It was truly an exquisite experience, and we will reminisce and cherish those memorable moments for a lifetime!”

Long tables with exquisite white chairs, table linen, pretty blooms and black plates lit up the majestic interiors of the caves of Cavas Codorniu at the reception. Jill wore an elegant white gown and Niraj wore a fancy all-black jacket ensemble – and this theme was carried over to the table setting for the reception.
