Sakshi writes about her Destination Wedding in Kerala

I work as an Account Manager at Viewit.ca Inc and am also studying Interior Designing. My husband Salil is a Sales Operations Analyst at Honda Canada and we live in Newmarket, Canada.

Salil was very keen on a destination wedding, not a big celebration, but an intimate one with his loved ones. We had to choose between Goa, Andaman & Nicobar and Kerala. The most fascinating destination for our family seemed Kerala. On my first visit to the Kondai Lip Backwater Heritage resort in Alappuzha, I fell in love with the place and just knew this was the place I want to get married.

We didn’t hire the services of a Wedding Planner because I always wanted to organise my wedding and fortunately I got lots of ideas and information from WeddingSutra.com. I spent eight months in the planning and execution and the resort owner Renji Paul helped in making this important event of our lives very special.

Our wedding was a week long affair, the Engagement and Post Wedding Reception was held in Chandigarh where Salil’s parents live and the Sangeet, Mehndi, Wedding and Mini Reception in Kerala. The theme for the Sangeet was Punjabi- all the ladies were dressed in a Patiala suit with Paranda and the men wore Kurta with jeans.

Wedding Planning was not entirely easy though, since me and my parents live in Canada, and his parents in Chandigarh. We found it a little difficult to find decorators within our budget, and a Pandit ji who could conduct the wedding as per our Punjabi traditions, but in the end everything worked out well. We chose a simple and elegant look for the decor- jasmine flowers along with colorful flower carnations. I sketched the Mandap layout to brief the decorator and he did a very good job.

My Sangeet and Reception ensemble were self-designed and the Wedding lehenga was designed by Laila Bijlani Motwane. I never met her in person, but the entire interaction was done over email and she did an amazing job. For the wedding my look was colorful and traditional- a light, colorful lehenga teamed with a Kundan and traditional gold set.
