Urmi and Vishal, Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Thailand

Sudden showers did not dampen festivities at Urmi and Vishal's nuptials in Thailand that included a samba-themed engagement and a Bengali wedding ceremony.

Vishal, an entrepreneur, and Urmi, an orthodontist, are both based in Dubai, UAE. He hails from a Sindhi family, while she is a Bengali. They met for the first time on her birthday. Here, Urmi shares magical moments of their romance and wedding at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa in Thailand.

How We Met
“I was set up on a blind date by my friends on my birthday, and Vishal was supposedly my ‘birthday gift’. From the moment we met, we both knew that what we had was something special. Although we were separated by distance for some time, we could never let go of each other. And whenever we were together, it was like magic.”

Wedding Proposal
“The proposal wasn’t a planned affair and happened very spontaneously during lunch at the Irish Village in Dubai. The weather was just perfect, and Vishal decided to casually ask me where I wanted to get married. I was too surprised, happy and confused with what was happening. The ‘Eternal Bachelor’ had spoken of marriage! We shared a few laughs and tears – it was perfect.”

Wedding Venue
“The Sheraton Hua Hin Beach Resort and Spa in Thailand was on the top of my wish list, and when we visited the venue, we both knew that it was going to be perfect for us. Our wedding planners, Magnificence Events informed us that the venue would be ideal for the celebrations we had in mind. Plus, we were assured that the staff would try and accommodate all our wedding needs as far as possible. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this beautiful beach resort with lush surroundings and serene scenic lagoons was exactly what we were looking for.”

Wedding Functions

Engagement Night
“We held the engagement night at the resort’s in-house discotheque ‘Black’ as we knew that we’d be partying till the wee hours of the morning. The event had a samba theme, and we had exotic samba dancers and Caribbean cocktails which set the mood for rest of the evening. I wore a bejeweled peach Swarovski mermaid dress that I got custom-made by Dar Sara Fashions in Dubai and paired it with diamond earrings and bracelet. Vishal wore a customized tuxedo which matched my look perfectly.”

Thread Ceremony & Mehndi
“I honestly don’t know how Vishal made it to his ‘Janya’ (thread) ceremony looking so fresh after having just slept for just a few hours. I remember waking up that morning feeling very excited to get my mehndi done. However, we faced some rains in the afternoon and had to shift the party indoors, but it just added to the fun of getting into the pool. I wore a customized Mahima Mahajan outfit which included a glittery pale yellow blouse with intricate gold thread work which was paired with a draped deep pink tulip hi-low skirt. I was able to show off the mehndi designs on my feet in this dress. I loved the yellow dupatta with tassels, which was my favorite part of this ensemble! I accessorized my look with statement earrings and a ‘jhumar’ ( a traditional ornament worn on one side of the head).”

Sangeet
“We really didn’t expect our friends to pull off what they did for our sangeet function. I’d planned a surprise for Vishal with some friends which giving a speech. That speech really got emotions flowing and with the bonding that was happening, it just notched up the tempo. It was so beautiful and heartwarming to see all of our family and friends, who had traveled from far and were meeting each other for the first time, do a coordinated epic dance performance. You could see it in their eyes… they had all been waiting for this moment as much as we had. Another crazy night of partying took place, and nobody passed on it, from young to old. They were all there.”

Haldi
“For my haldi ceremony, I wore a traditional Bengali cotton saree with ‘jhumkas’ (ethnic earrings) and was made to wear the Bengali bridal tiara for the first time. After my haldi shower, I applied ‘alta’, (A red dye applied on a bride in Bengali weddings) to adorn my hands and feet to get ready for the wedding.”

Wedding
“The big day was finally here! I had a Dodhi Mongol puja (Bengali wedding ritual) at 6 am where I was given a beautifully embellished ‘Gach Kouto’ (a pot containing vermillion powder and a silver coin) from Kolkata, which is a traditional Bengali bride’s accessory, I had to hold this in my hands throughout the ceremony. It started raining again, so we had to set up our mandap indoors. Our planners did an amazing job at managing this last minute hiccup. For the wedding ceremony, I was carried by my brothers to the wedding altar. I covered my face with betel leaves and was taken around Vishal seven times before I let him see me – although Vishal does say that he’d managed to get a peek of me before the event. Seeing each other for the first time that day, in all our grandeur, was a surreal feeling. All that mattered was that we got married while being surrounded and blessed by our family and friends who are the closest to our hearts. We both chose to wear traditional Bengali bridal outfits for this ceremony. Vishal wore a customized tussar silk dhoti with a bandh gala jacket and a matching turban, while I wore a bright red Benarasi silk sari with traditional gold and uncut diamond jewellery.”

Advice for Couples
“Do your research thoroughly on the vendors for your wedding, whether it’s your planners, makeup artists or outfit designers, and pick the ones that suit you best. Delegate duties to your family and friends at the time of the wedding and also go easy on them. Everything has a way of sorting itself out. And the most important tip is that one should invest in their wedding, but it’s the marriage that you take home with you. Don’t let the wedding get bigger than you and your partner.”
