Disha and Shil, Bora Bora and Moorea

Island hopping, jet skiing and shark spotting were the high points of Disha and Shil's honeymoon.

Disha decided on her dream honeymoon destination about a decade ago, and after marrying Shil, the love of her life, all there was left to do was pack her bags and jet off to the lovely location. The two spent about a week in French Polynesia and brought back a lifetime of memories. She shares with us the highlights of their trip.

How They Met
“Shil and I are high school sweethearts and have been together for eight years!”

Honeymoon Planning
“In 2010, I watched a show called ‘The Bachelorette,’ and the final episode took place in Bora Bora. While watching the contestant say ‘Yes’ to the man she loved, my 17-year-old self decided that one day I would go there with the love of my life and stay in an overwater bungalow. It became my dream honeymoon destination and Shil made it come true! We started our trip in Napa Valley, California, where we visited several wineries and vineyards. Then, we went to Moorea, an island in French Polynesia, with the grand finale in Bora Bora, also in French Polynesia. After that, we flew to Los Angeles, California, and spent a day there, before making our way back to New Jersey.”

Honeymoon Highlights
“We dedicated one part of our honeymoon to exploring Moorea, where we took a private guided ATV tour around the heart-shaped island! This was organized by Moorea Activities Center and was a memorable excursion. In addition, we visited the Opunohu valley as well as its rivers and plantations where we got a chance to sample fresh local juices and witness the panoramic views. Here, not only did we get to see sacred lands, mountains, and spellbinding sceneries, but also have some delectable cuisines! A remarkable feature of the restaurants in Moorea is that they arrange for free pickups and drops to and from your hotel which makes everything so much easier for tourists! In Bora Bora, we saw the entire island by water! We took a jet skiing tour and got to see all the other luxury five-star hotels on the island. We also stopped in the middle of the blue waters for a quick swim. Once we got to the other end of the island, our tour guide went to land to get us fresh fruits. He cut the fruit in the middle of the ocean and we enjoyed them on the back of the jetski! This was an extremely cool experience and absolutely delicious! We relished the mangoes, grapefruits, coconuts, and bananas.”

Best Meal Of The Trip
“The best meal of our trip was at the Iriatai French Restaurant at Conrad Bora Bora Nui. I am vegetarian so I decided to go with truffle risotto, while Shil had mahi-mahi fish with mushroom ravioli in morel sauce. The service was exceptional, the food came in a timely manner, and the staff there suggested the perfect wine options to pair with the dishes we chose. The team was super friendly, accommodating, and kind. We would go back again and again!”

Most Romantic Moment
“Every moment in Bora Bora was romantic, but if we had to choose, it would be the night we spent at the Iriatai Wine Bar. They had a performance planned by a singer and as we were enjoying our cocktails, Shil requested him to sing ‘All of Me’ by John Legend and asked me for a dance. In that moment, it felt like we were the only ones there and nothing else existed or mattered.”

Advice For Couples
Must Experience
“When in Moorea, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and experiencing restaurants outside your resort are a must! The waters in French Polynesia are unreal! We have never seen as many shades of blue as we saw there. It truly was amazing. In Bora Bora, a jetski tour is highly recommended! The only way to see that island’s beauty is by water. The shark and stingray tour makes for an unforgettable experience as well.”

Can Avoid
“French Polynesia is very expensive so try carrying things with you! If you can, purchase alcohol, snacks and food at the duty-free section, or pay for an extra bag – but take things with you. For vegetarians, food options are limited, so pack what you can ahead of time.”

Must-avoid
“Nothing really!”
