Khushboo and Karan, New Zealand and Bora Bora

Lavender fields, yummy burgers, swimming with sharks and autumn colors made Karan and Khushboo's month-long honeymoon in New Zealand and Bora Bora a feast for all the senses.

Travel-loving Karan and Khushboo knew they would probably be able to take a month-long break only for their honeymoon, so they wanted to make the most of it. Tripoetic designed the vacation of a lifetime to New Zealand and Bora Bora for them. Khushboo shares some highlights here.

How We Met
“Karan and I met through a mutual friend. One day, both of them decided to meet up, and I dropped in on their plan too. Karan and I clicked instantly. We have similar likes and dislikes and happened to enjoy each other’s company a lot.”

Honeymoon Planning
“Since we had decided to take a super long leave, we knew we wanted to explore some place that was far away from India. Scandinavia, Canada and New Zealand were our initial options, but we chose to go ahead with the latter because the weather there at that time of the year was perfect. Karan loves cold places, and New Zealand was experiencing autumn in April. We did not face too much of touristy crowds thankfully. We also made a five-day stop at Bora Bora. Our stay here was quite a contrast to our action-packed New Zealand excursion. We spent languid days in Bora Bora just enjoying the views of marine life from our overwater hotel room, kayaking in the sea and swimming in the ocean. Watching the marine life pass under our room and staring at the beautiful colors that the Pacific Ocean took on at different points in the day was the most rejuvenating experience we have ever had.”

Since this had to be a highly personalised itinerary, we decided to have Tripoetic plan the whole honeymoon. They custom planned each day meticulously keeping in mind our interests and the activities we wanted to do. Thanks to them, this was a dream honeymoon.

Honeymoon Highlights
“Swimming with Blacktip Sharks was definitely the high point of our entire trip. There was no cage or barrier between us. It was just us with the underwater life of Bora Bora. The experience sounds scary, but there was really nothing to be afraid of. We saw a wide variety of fishes and coral reefs during the dive. In New Zealand, our memorable moments comprised visiting lavender farms where we bought fresh lavender products, lounging in natural hot water pools and enjoying the warm autumn colors.”

Best Meal
“Our dining experience at Hone’s Garden at Russell in New Zealand was one of the best of the entire trip. Their wood-fired oven pizzas were out of the world, and they had great beers to go with them. Karan and I love pizzas and beer, so this place offered the ultimate meal to us. Karan also loved the burgers from Fergburger in Queenstown. Karan is a complete burger boy, so for him, this place provided for the best food experience. We were in Queenstown for about five days and ate here thrice despite their half-an-hour long queues.”

Most Romantic Moments
“Our most romantic moments took place one night in Bora Bora. Since our hotel room was built over the water and had a private deck, we spent the evening outside, gazing at the stars, watching the fishes pass by as the lights underneath the deck illuminated the waters, having a meaningful conversation, listening to the sound of the waves and sipping on some wine. It was magical!”

Restaurants We Loved
“Perky’s Floating Bar & Coffee Shop in Queenstown is situated on a yacht, and it offers great alcohol options and lets you carry your own food. They do have a food menu, but since this isn’t a proper restaurant, the options are more around snacks, rather than a full meal. We carried our trusty burgers from Fergburger and sat on the deck to enjoy the view as we relished our food.”

Must Experience
“Self-driving through New Zealand is a must! Not only does it give you a lot more freedom to plan and edit your itinerary on the go, but there is also so much natural diversity you can explore from behind the wheel. You will be driving through thick greenery and suddenly you will see a beach. The landscape changes so dramatically at every few kilometers that you get pleasantly surprised every time.”

Can Avoid
“There are no ‘can avoid’ activities when it comes to New Zealand and Bora Bora. Both of them are fantastic in what they offer, be it food, activities or natural beauty.”

Must Avoid
“Forget domestic flights! Road tripping in New Zealand is a must as it is such a beautiful country and to be able to fully immerse yourself in the culture and vistas there, you have to take your own vehicle.”

Hotels We Stayed At
“We stayed at the InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora in Bora Bora. In New Zealand, we changed a lot of hotels since we were on a road trip. If I were to pick the best of the lot, it would have to be the five-star Russell Cottages in Russell. Since people usually don’t visit the North Island that much, there is hardly anyone there. With their beachside shacks and candlelight dinners on the waterfront, it’s the perfect option for honeymooning couples.”
