Cape Town

We were considering New Zealand and South Africa. One of the main deciding factors was the weather. We both love the sun and beaches and December being the coldest month, we wanted to choose the other side of the equator. We had heard South Africa is an unsafe place, but chose to go there because of the diversity it offers i.e. beaches, mountains, wildlife and adventure sports. We spoke to a few friends who had been there and they gave us first hand information about the places to visit, stay, safety concerns, etc.

We went there during the best weather and time- the start of Christmas till New Years and onwards. We were in South Africa for around 10 days and visited Cape Town, Stellenbosch and several areas around them like Franschhoek, Cape Peninsula, Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Boulders beach, Muizenberg, Simon’s Town, etc. We spent one week in Cape Town and three days in Stellenbosch which has South Africa’s best vineyards.

Hotels where we stayed at- Inn on the Square in Cape Town and the Devon Valley hotel in Stellenbosch

Must experience

  • Cape Town, Stellenbosch vineyard tour, Camps Bay- the best place to party and hang out.
  • Cheetah petting- The best part of our trip!
  • Boulders beach- for penguin spotting
  • James beach- for tidal infinity pools with colorful huts.
  • Cape of Good Hope- A long flight of stairs to watch the 2 oceans meet, but worth it.
  • Shark cage Diving – If you are up for some adventure this is a must-try!
  • Table Mountain- for a ropeway ride
  • Long Street in Cape Town- for the best hookah bars, clubs and nightlife.
  • Arnold’s- The best restaurant to try different meats, like the kangaroo burger, crocodile meat and springbok meat.
  • If one can’t do Kruger National Park then go for the safaris close to Cape Town which are about 2 hours drive. We went for the Aquila Safari.
  • Garden route is one of the best routes to include in your itinerary. One must have a look at Chapman’s peak and Hout Bay (famous for seal watching).

Must Do

The best way to see Cape Town and places around is to hire a car. There isn’t a better and a safer way than in your own car!

Must avoid

Johannesburg- Due to safety issues and in other parts like Cape Town, etc avoid going to the old side of the city. Late nights are not recommended in the deserted areas.

Bookings

We managed our own bookings as we wanted to avoid going in a group tour. We booked in September so we could get good flight and hotel deals. Our flight bookings were done through a travel agent but hotels were booked on our own by reading trip advisor reviews.
