Supriya and Bharat, a couple from Kolkata who tied the knot this January, went to New Zealand for their honeymoon. Keeping in mind the time of the year (February), they considered South Africa, New Zealand and a few other tropical islands. Supriya says, “We were both very keen on Croatia or Greece, but Europe in February would have been freezing. Bharat was keen on taking me on a road trip as I had once mentioned that I had never been on one. Based on our interests Pritish Shah who runs ‘A Travel Duet – Handcrafted Honeymoons’ suggested New Zealand would be the best bet- but instead of covering two or three main destinations, he suggested we cover lesser known towns extensively. He also suggested some offbeat activities and accommodations which further strengthened our choice.”

Boutique Hotels and Studio Apartments

During their trip, they covered Lake Tekapo, Queenstown, Wanaka, Fox Glacier, Westport and Nelson in South Island and they stayed at the Coromandel Coast in North Island. Their accommodations varied from an artistically designed studio apartment at Nelson to secluded lodges at Westport and Coromandel to budget hotels at places like Queenstown where one wouldn’t really spend much time indoors. “We were not keen on 7-star chains and the team at ‘A Travel Duet – Handcrafted Honeymoons’ did a great job in selecting our places of stay- not once did we feel that we missed the ‘big brand’ hotels & resorts. Moreover, the boutique hotels provided us with a lovely opportunity to interact and stay with the locals, eat some delicious meals and live in rooms that were personally designed by the owners and away from the hustle bustle of regular tourist activity”, says Supriya.

Advice to other Honeymooners

  • If you enjoy driving, definitely pick a road trip – it’s a perfect way to spend time together, stop on the way, and explore the country.
  • Opt for boutique hotels and avoid the chains in most places.
  • Experience nature, experience the activities, go for random walks, and cook with the lodge owners if possible- avoid crowds but definitely pick a mix of touristy and non-touristy activities.
  • Carry sunscreen, insect repellent, snacks and munchies for the drives.
  • Consider photography- New Zealand was perfect for photography so we had a ball with our SLRs.

A Travel Duet – Handcrafted Honeymoons
Supriya and Bharat state, “Pritish and his team at ‘A Travel Duet’ were the perfect choice for our honeymoon planning. We didn’t want to take the regular ‘travel agent’ route where they set up an itinerary with a 6-7-8 am schedule and book our stay at the fanciest hotels. The team customised the trip to the finest detail based on our budgets, preferences and interests. In Pritish we’ve found a friend who we can hang out with, who understands our taste and who we can call for travel-related information or advice whenever.”
