Megan and Rohit, Chelsea Piers Lighthouse, New York

The Light House at Chelsea Piers had a vibrant look as Megan and Rohit's traditional Indian wedding unfolded with colorful festivities and ethnic decor.

Megan and Rohit planned a charming wedding – from a traditional Indian ceremony to a modern reception – and every function was meticulously designed with their tastes in mind. Here, the couple share highlights of their big day.

How we met
Megan moved to New York in the summer of 2014 and started working for a boutique hotel. Rohit, ‘Ro’ to his friends, had been working there for 5 years and had maintained a strict ‘no dating girls at work’ policy. Megan says, “We worked in different departments of the hotel so didn’t have much interaction with each other besides the daily hellos. My colleagues knew that I found Ro cute and also knew that he found me cute so they bugged him on a daily basis about when he was going to ask me out.” So Ro asked his friends what to do and eventually they helped him tweak his policy and muster up the courage to go to the front desk and ask Megan out. She says, “After our first date we were pretty much inseparable.”

The Proposal
“In February 2017, Ro was in London on work and asked if I’d like to come to Paris for the weekend. I said of course! I had no idea he was going to propose and he was really good at hiding it. On the 20th of February, we made plans to eat brunch at our favorite Parisian restaurant that overlooks the Eiffel Tower. On the way, he stopped in front of the Eiffel Tower and asked someone to take a photo of us. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I said yes.”

Wedding Venue
“Ro’s family is from New York and for mine, most of whom are in Ireland and California, the city was a great midway point. We picked the Lotte New York Palace Hotel courtyard for our sangeet. I love being outdoors and finding an outdoor venue was really important to me which in New York that isn’t the easiest task.

For the wedding day we chose the Chelsea Piers Lighthouse as Ro loved the rustic warehouse feel of it. I loved that it was on the water with beautiful views of the city. Our wedding brunch was hosted on the rooftop of Dream Downtown overlooking the cityscape. We wanted to be able to show everyone different parts of the city.”

Wedding Functions

Sangeet
“We wanted the sangeet to be fun, bright and whimsical. Meena was very good at planning this for us. We really wanted to highlight Indian wedding traditions and Meena brought in a lot of umbrellas and colorful pillows. We had a bangle and bindi station and two henna artists. We brought in an Indian catering company to serve up some great food. Fun fact – many of our bridesmaids and groomsmen don’t live in New York so they had to learn the Sangeet dance the day of the Sangeet!”

Wedding and Reception
“For the wedding, we wanted the ceremony to be bright and the reception more muted, but within the same pink and orange palette. We rented linen and plates to make sure everything tied together. Yena worked with us to create the perfect setting. She placed flowers and lights above the dance floor to make it more romantic. For the escort card ‘Table’ we decided to do a tree and had the escort cards hanging from different colored ribbons. The tree was there to represent our growth together and the start of us building a life together. To bring in the Irish side, we rented an ice cream truck and had them make ‘99s’. A 99 in Ireland is soft serve ice cream topped with chocolate flakes and it is one of my favorite desserts in Ireland.”

Advice for Couples
“Just have fun with it. Wedding planning can be extremely stressful so try to not focus on the little things. When it comes to your wedding day, don’t get too hung up on things that didn’t go as planned or expected- only you notice these things. Have fun and enjoy yourself with your guests. There is only one time in your life that you will have so many of your loved ones in the one room.”
