How We Met
“Navin and I grew up as family friends in Chicago up until my family moved away when I was around seven years old. Our families kept in touch, but Navin and I didn’t see each other after that. Twenty years later, a chance meeting in New York sent sparks flying between us. I happened to be in New York visiting my sister and celebrating my friend’s birthday. Navin’s cousin, who is a friend of my sister, invited Navin to the party and that’s when we met. There was an immediate connection, but since we lived in different cities, it took us about six months to meet again.”

Proposal
“After three years of dating, Navin proposed to me at a botanical garden in Columbus, Ohio. He planned a beautiful proposal in a tulip garden on the perfect spring day. Later, he and my friends surprised me with a cocktail party and intimate dinner.”

Wedding Venue
“Navin and I decided to get married in Columbus, Ohio. I had done my schooling and training in Columbus, and it was close to both of our families in terms of location. It was the city where Navin and I truly fell in love, and we couldn’t have picked a more fitting location. Since we have family spread all over the country as well as in India, we wanted to pick a venue that would accommodate our large guest list and provide a place for our outstation guests to stay. We chose the Hilton Columbus at Easton for this reason. The ballrooms were of the perfect size, and the hotel was right in the center of a shopping mall as well as close to the airport. Additionally, our favorite ice cream shop was right around the corner from the Hilton!”

Wedding Functions
“Navin’s family was very gracious and allowed us to have a traditional Telugu wedding ceremony. We had multi-day functions in different cities. Navin had his ‘haldi’ (turmeric application) ceremony in Chicago with his family and friends a week before the wedding. I began my bridal functions at my family’s home in Lima, Ohio (about two hours away from Columbus by car).”

Mehndi and Haldi
“My mother and her friends decorated the house themselves and opted for a very traditional theme with yellow and gold marigold blooms. My first function was a mehndi ceremony that lasted the whole day, and it was filled with dances and lots of food. I had my haldi function conducted in a typical Telugu fashion. We call this ceremony the ‘Pelli Kuthuru’ and it’s when the girl ‘becomes a bride.’ All our close friends, relatives and my bridesmaids were able to attend my haldi ceremony.”

Sangeet
“We had a Varalakshmi pooja as well as a Gauri pooja before our sangeet in Columbus, which was attended by both sides of the family. Our cousins and friends performed multiple dances, and Navin’s mother and aunts also danced. Navin and I danced to a choreographed number. My theme for the sangeet was a garden theme with pink, lavender, and greens as the color scheme as I wanted to keep it simple and elegant. We also had a small flower wall with a park bench for Navin and me to sit at during the performances. My gorgeous sangeet lehenga was sourced from Mumbai, and I opted for a Rajasthani-style necklace in gold with pearls as accessories.”

Wedding
“I wanted a very colorful and earthy look for my mandap and decor. I designed my mandap myself with fresh flowers and hanging lanterns. My florist and decorator helped bring it to life, and I was so happy with the way it turned out. Celosia is one of my favorite summertime flowers, and they’re abundant in the Midwest. I remember sitting across from Navin at the mandap and looking up to see myself surrounded by cascading celosia. It was perfect at the moment. I chose to wear a traditional yellow silk sari for my wedding and Navin was in contrasting blue and green. I dressed my bridesmaids in blue silk saris as well and my Maid of Honor (my sister) in blue and green. Navin’s groomsmen wore light yellow kurtas. After the wedding ceremony, Navin planned a surprise trip to my favorite ice cream shop (Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams) with the help of my photographer and crew. We got a few photos there while eating my favorite scoop before our big reception.”

Reception
“Our reception was in the evening and started with a cocktail hour. My reception theme was again bright florals, and I decided not to have a stage. Instead, I chose to sit close to my family near the dance floor. I didn’t want to feel isolated from all the festivities and wanted to be right in the center of all the action. I designed the overhead table arrangements with a floral wall, and my florist brought it to life. Our DJ was amazing and kept the party going all night. We had a few dance performances again, one of my nieces performed a classical Kuchipudi dance. My brother and sister also sang one of my favorite songs – ‘Time of My Life from the movie ‘Dirty Dancing’.”
