You're
trying to find a song for your first dance and are unsure how to
approach it! Here's help from New York based artist Oorbee Roy who
culled experiences from real-life couples and the experts on how to
approach your moment in the spotlight for an unforgettable
experience.
One
of the truly memorable and equally agonizing moments of a wedding,
the first dance is really a private moment for the couple to enjoy
their wedding bliss. The song should not only evoke strong emotions
in both the bride and groom but should also adequately convey to the
guests the unique bond between the happy couple.
DJ
Masti, a New York/New Jersey/Texas based professional has
often had the honor of presenting a newlywed couple for their first
dance. He says: "The first dance symbolizes the beginning of a
new life together. The guests perceive the dance as very touching
and the couple are excited to know the song's meaning."
According to DJ Masti some of the more popular requests for the
first dance is: "Lady in Red" by Chris deBurgh,
"Always and Forever" by Luther Vandross and "Jab Koi
Baat Bigad Jaaye" from the movie Jurm.
If you're
apprehensive about being in the limelight, practice dancing or take
dance lessons to ease your woes. Don't worry too much, the
nervousness surrounding the first dance will wash away once you and
your new spouse take to the dance floor. As the song symbolizing
your love fills the room, you will find that you are a confident and
joyful couple, welcoming the start of your new life together.
Here are some stories from
real-life couples who have been gracious enough to share their
experiences. You will be surprised at how the emotional excitement
of the first dance transitions to a calming moment of mutual
affection:
Couple:
Anita Ghatak & Shomik Roy
Date of Wedding: 14th July, 2001
Location: Hilton, Allentown, PA
First Dance Song: "Soul Sanctuary", Prince
As a longtime fan
of Prince, the singer whose romantic ballads puts him decades ahead
of his time, "Soul Sanctuary" was an obvious choice for
the groom. After six years of dating, the lyrics were a perfect
representation of how Shomik felt for his new wife, "Loving you
in silence, knowing that it's right, Under your gaze I ponder this
love 2night. Unbothered by the chaos swirling 'round outside, In
your arms is where I want 2 live and die." And for the couple,
it was a true reflection of their marriage vows.
Seeing the couple
on the dance floor, none of the guests would have guessed that right
before their first dance, Anita and Shomik were scared, excited and
overwhelmed. Magically, as they took to the dance floor for the
first time as husband and wife, they were remarkably calm. As Shomik
affectionately recalls, "Despite 400 pairs of eyes on us, it
seemed the universe, for a brief moment, existed entirely for us.
More than the emotional excitement, we were pleasantly surprised to
realize how calm we both were. At that moment, we could rest. Almost
two years of planning and the song was the first time we actually
had a chance to rest, to talk, and to become reacquainted. We
danced, talked, and conversed with youthful exuberance and reckless
abandon." For the happy couple, it became a well-earned moment
of intimacy where they could reconnect and celebrate.
After over a year
of marriage, their first dance song continues to hold a special
place for the couple. They can enjoy a flash of nostalgia for a day
they both hold very close to their hearts whenever they play
"Soul Sanctuary".
On choosing a first
dance song, Shomik's advise is: "Try to find a song that isn't
a wedding anthem, find one that is reasonably short and insist to
the DJ that your choice is final. If the DJ doesn't have the song,
supply a copy. Also, make sure the moment is captured properly. The
videographer should have the whole first dance on video with the
song audio prevalent. Ask the photographer to take pictures from
varying angles and if possible, in both color and black & white.
Some of the best wedding pictures come from the first dance."
