The 2nd Edition of the Gionee India Beach Fashion Week (GIBFW) 2015, was held in Goa with the theme ‘Beach is the New Ramp’. A number of of established and emerging designers showcased their beach/ resort wear and “destination bride” collection. We spoke to 5 designers from different cities to find out what their destination brides want to wear for their wedding celebrations.
The destination-bride collection is called ‘Golden Kourtines’. Kourtines are gracious drapes and they have been used in all the garments. Brides and bridesmaids today are looking for clothes beyond the lehengas and usual silhouettes and colours. They want what’s out of the box, to complement their style sensibilities and represent their personalities. Destination weddings add fun and have an element of laissez-faire to the festivities. The clothes need to reflect that mood. This collection is about comfort and minimalism while keeping it stylish. It’s for the sexy bride.
Kamaali Couture have used a palette of cream, black and red with gold embellishment.

The ‘Rosette’ collection for the destination bride showcased classic vintage style, replete with rich tradition and culture. Shades of English rose, champagne, golden peach, lavender and a dash of powder blue enhanced the sensuous contours of capes, luxurious palazzos, draped ensembles as well as lehengas, and ornate blouses.
A light weight ensemble is ideal for a destination wedding. Most brides lean toward stylish combinations of lehengas, dhoti-pants, draped silhouettes and floor length gowns. This collection for the bride and her wedding party is stylish but most importantly, easy to wear. The bride needs to be able to enjoy herself on her wedding day and light weight, flowy fabrics with delicate work is ideal. This approach to the design also increases the long-term value of the trousseau, because they can be worn to other events.

Mayyur Girotra’s ‘Destination Brides’, retro collection is inspired by the 50s but remains chic with a contemporary structure that is easy to pack, travel with and wear around. Chic and edgy, brides know what they want: an ensemble that is easy, stylish and trendy. Brides and bridesmaids love flowy light lehengas in fun colours, made festive and formal with exquisite detailing but breaking away from boring old tradition.
Equipped with plenty of shimmer and bling, the collection featured capes, lehengas and sarees for all the festivities of a wedding ceremony. Perfect for a beach wedding on the shores of Oman or Goa, ready to reflect a gorgeous sunset, the lehengas dazzle with showers of glitter, while the cocktail saris sparkle with sequinned gold and silver embroidery on yellow, red, white, and black hues.

Her collection called “The Vintage Klatch” had elements of New Vintage with a cheekiness and hints of casual chic.
Ever on the look out to stand out from the crowd, brides and bridesmaids will find what they want: cocktail gowns, capes, lehengas with crop tops or even different lengths of jackets.
Riddhi played with Indian ethnic wear, nodding to modern style with soft pastel tones, dainty flowers and tassels that would look incredible at a destination wedding in lush Thailand.

Classic yet contemporary festive and wedding wear from Shruti and Aakriti Grover’s “Boheme Bride” collection is perfect for the unconventional bride who is a wanderer at heart.
Aware of the fact that destination weddings need easy to pack trousseaux, the designers have created practical, stylish clothes in light fabrics and flowy silhouettes that are perfect for say, the warm breezes of a beach wedding in Thailand.
The ensembles are primarily crafted in organic cotton, woven from soya bean and latte fibre in romantic pinks and the classic festive wear had gorgeous gotta-patti work and ombré dyes. The lehengas, ghararas, shararas and saris are designed with added flare and layers giving the desi wear a contemporary touch.
