Top Hoteliers Share 10 Hot Wedding Trends

Get in the know about hot trends creating a buzz at weddings these days from the professionals who know it best.

Hotels have become the go-to venues for many weddings in India and abroad as they offer impeccable spaces, matchless service, diverse cuisines and warm hospitality all under one roof. Hosting umpteen diverse large-scale or intimate weddings annually gives hotel professionals invaluable insights into what is trending at weddings, be it in the cuisine, décor, pampering experiences, entertainment and other spheres. Here, six hoteliers from Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Bangalore share all the interesting trends they see emerging in their luxury properties.

Samrat Datta and Farhan Khan, Taj Bengal, Kolkata
Trends: Special Effects & Unique Setups
“Pre-wedding shoots are very popular at our hotel, as are bachelor’s bashes or sangeet ceremonies that offer a unique bar set-up. For example, an ice bar which juggles the appearance of fire and frost is much sought after. Fusion food and interactive food stations have become a must at modern weddings, and desserts are now served with dry ice and liquid nitrogen to give them a special effect that is dramatic and yet pleasing to the eye.For lavish sangeet and wedding events, the trend of using special effects such as cold fire, stage burners, Co2 jets and steam guns is gaining popularity these days.”

Alok Chakravarty, Shangri La’s Eros Hotel, New Delhi
Trends: Bite-sized Treats, Brunches & Concept Buffets
“Earlier parents and family elders were decision makers but over time, the current generation has started opting for innovations in decor, fashion as well as food presentation, and are open to experimentation.Wedding guests are now better traveled, exposed to different world cuisines, and have developed much more evolved palettes. This makes it imperative for a chef or hotel’s catering team to design an avant-garde and well thought out menu. Favorite dishes have shrunk down to bite-sized portions, and this is a hit with guests. Another trend is that of couples wanting to integrate their regional culinary heritage into the wedding theme. Also, the concept of lavish brunches is winning over other options as it offers a mind-boggling variety such as eggs, specialized waffles with innovative fillings, sliders, cakes, bagels, tacos, nachos, rice, pasta and even desserts. Concept Buffets with a theme or unique setup are also very popular.”

Trends: ‘Sweetheart Tables’ & Technology Integration
“Hotels are geared to offer end-to-end solutions for weddings. One trend that has caught on in a big way recently is a ‘Sweetheart Table’ for the groom and bride with personalized chinaware and monogrammed napkins. Wedding cakes, which were a Western ritual earlier, has also become very popular in India, alongside vintage cars which we provide couples on request. We are abreast and keep pace with latest technology be it through wedding websites, live streaming options and social media integration for pre- and post-wedding functions. Themed food décor that matches a millennial couple’s tastes are always a hit. We have also seen the trend of destination weddings rising as they offer more quality-oriented and personalized service given that the number of guests are typically more limited.”

Trends: Smaller Weddings, Unusual Rides & Specialized Services
“In my opinion, the trend is definitely turning towards smaller weddings where couples celebrate with just close family and friends. We have recently had smaller NRI and Indo-American/European weddings where there have been only 200 people present. We have also found a shift in wedding food sensibilities, ranging from clients requesting global cuisines on one hand and regional and traditional Indian menus on the other. Food presentation had decreased to small bites and appetizers. Themed bars and cocktails menus are a hit, and we have found that grooms prefer classic cocktails while brides are opting for martini bars. Decorated rickshaws and open-air vintage cars are also popular at weddings, especially for the baraat. We also assist NRI families with end-to-end wedding shopping. Another big trend is organizing special surprises for proposals such as curated getaways and hot air balloon rides, and we have organized these in the past.  The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai also offers special yoga classes and a vitality pool where a bride and groom can indulge themselves and also avail of special rituals and indulgent body treatments.”

Trends: Convenient Locations & Fusion Food
“Most couples are looking for novelty at their wedding. Convenience is becoming very popular when it comes to wedding locations. The trend is to look for places that are centrally located and accessible. The ambiance of the venue does play an important role too. In a lot of cases where the couple is arranging the wedding, they prefer smaller gatherings of friends and family. Where the parents and elders organize the wedding, the numbers of invitees are much larger as they tend to call almost all known guests. In Bengaluru, such weddings take place in convention halls/grounds and the hotels are used for smaller functions. A big trend in wedding cuisine is Indo-Asian and Continental fusion food which is popular among guests. Sightseeing and spa treatments are more common in destination and NRI weddings.”
